BEHAVIOR CHANGE COMMUNICATION
Our behavioural interventions include a range of communication activities designed to encourage HIV risk reducing behaviour and increase protective behaviours. These activities include mass media, community mobilization, advocacy and interpersonal communication.
We seek to change behaviours by providing services that address social determinants of health and increase knowledge and health literacy among vulnerable populations.
CERVICAL CANCER CONTROL & PREVENTION
We are working to pilot and scale-up effective approaches to increase women’s access to screening, treatment and referrals to decrease their risk of developing cervical cancer.
CHRONIC DISEASE SREENING
The priority non-communicable disease (NCD) areas are diabetes, cardiovascular disease, lifestyle cancer, chronic respiratory disease. Through integration with current sexual and reproductive health programs we have been able to focus on increasing access to screening for those most at risk for development of chronic disease.
CONDOMS AND LUBRICANT
Through partnerships with the private sector and using private sector marketing strategies, PSI-Caribbean increases demand for and access to attractively packaged, affordable, and high-quality male latex condoms, female condoms, and water based lubricant.
EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION PILLS
Emergency contraception is an important component of a comprehensive family planning program. It can be used to reduce the chance of unintended pregnancy following unprotected intercourse, contraceptive failure or misuse (such as forgotten pills or torn condoms), or in cases of sexual assault.
Our objective using social marketing for emergency contraception is to decrease the incidence of unintended pregnancies by making it available to women who have had unprotected intercourse.
We use private sector marketing strategies to increase demand for, and access to, attractively packaged, affordable, and high-quality latex female condoms.
When used correctly and consistently, male and female condoms reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STI), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and unintended pregnancy. The use of water-based lubricants with latex condoms decreases risk even further by preventing condom breakage.
We encourage clients to practice dual protection, meaning use of a male or female condom along with a modern contraceptive method in order to offer maximum protection against unintended pregnancies and STIs.
GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE PREVENTION
Through social marketing and behaviour change communication, we work to transform negative gender norms, spark community-wide intolerance of gender-based violence and support prevention service delivery.
We develop behaviour change communication (BCC) initiatives that use mass media, interpersonal communication, community mobilization and advocacy to address gender-based violence (GBV) and the gender inequalities that drive it.
We design BCC messaging by first understanding the gender-related social norms, attitudes and beliefs held in different communities and contexts. These messages are then integrated into existing social marketing and BCC programs or used to create new initiatives with specific target populations.
Our solutions enable the use of family planning methods, including injectables, within the context of informed choice. In addition to marketing contraceptives to consumers, we support service providers in their provision of injectables and other short-acting methods as authorized by local health authorities.
The IUD as Emergency Contraception
The IUD can also be used as a form of emergency contraception. The Copper IUD is in fact the most effective form of emergency contraception. The IUD as emergency contraception can be used to reduce the chance of unintended pregnancy following unprotected intercourse, contraceptive failure or misuse (such as forgotten pills or torn condoms), or in cases of sexual assault. The IUD can be inserted up to five days following unprotected intercourse, and can be used for up to twelve years. To facilitate access to IUDs as emergency contraception, PSI-C has worked with partners to modify provider screening tools to include the option of IUD as an emergency contraception method.
The key to a successful family planning program lies in offering a wide range of contraceptive options to meet the diverse needs and wishes of clients. Oral contraceptives are a popular method among women and couples around the world. They are a highly effective, reversible and safe method of preventing unintended pregnancy.
Our marketing strategies for oral contraceptives create consumer demand by addressing the key barriers preventing a woman from using oral contraceptives, often related to safety concerns. We then work with providers to meet demand.
SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTION SCREENING AND DIAGNOSIS
As part of a combination prevention approach, our HIV programs in partnership with local organizations provide clients with sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening, diagnosis and treatment services, reducing their risk of HIV infection and improving their overall sexual and reproductive health
TESTING AND COUNSELING
Globally, HIV testing and counselling (HTC) has given millions of people knowledge of their HIV status and acted as a critical entry point to HIV care and treatment for people living with HIV (PLHIV). We support HTC services through a network of local partners across the Caribbean. In 2014, our network tested and counselled over 3000 people for HIV. All testing services are tailored to reach populations most affected by HIV in a given country, including female sex workers, men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs and other high risk groups.
