Today is International Youth Day. The theme this year is ‘Youth Civic Engagement’ which seeks to shine light on how young people are campaigning on social issues that matter to them while encouraging others to get involved.
As part of the United Nations System-Wide Action Plan (Youth-SWAP) on Youth, International Youth Day is already expecting to have over 100,000 young activists participating in over a hundred events.
According to the UN Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, more efforts are needed to raise awareness about the importance of youth civic engagement and its benefits to the individual and to society, including sustainable development as well as resilience and well-being.
The International Youth Day 2015 campaign aims at promoting civic engagement and participation of youth in politics and public life, so that young people can be empowered and bring a full contribution to society, development and peace.
